Ugandan police ban suspected doomsday cult

Catholic World News/February 20, 2004

Kampala -- Police in Uganda have moved to shut down a religious cult, fearful of an incident similar to the mass murder-suicide of 500 people in March 2000.

Police in the Kanungu district took action after hearing reports that members of a cult called the Apostles and Prophets Church of Jesus had sold off their property, and were awaiting a dramatic event that would take them to heaven. The cult-- which has headquarters in the capital city, Kampala, as well as branches in Kanungu-- bore a resemblance to the Restoration of the Ten Commandments Movement, which masterminded the deaths of 500 followers in Kanungu in 2000.
